Joseph,
Its a matter of honor and respect. A person does a service for you, you thank them and pay them. If there’s a problem you work it out mutually and respectfully.
You are a professional. You do more than what you bill for, you are fair in your dealings and you don’t bullshit.
Your services are more than reasonable and helpful. They are essential to people like me that find themselves in a messy situation.
Carolyn R. - Testimonial (Dec 2019)
Hi, Joe,
This is Carolyn R. in Canby. You came out and did a roof inspection for us on Nov. 7th. Just wanted to update you on what has happened. We had our roofer come back and look at the ridge vent cut. He agreed his crew had not done it correctly. He and his crew will come back and redo the opening, plus, use 3-inch nails to nail down the ridge vent and the ridge caps. He, also, plans to put a second collar on every pipe. Thank you for the inspection. These are things we wouldn't have found without your help.
Sincerely, Carolyn R.

Joe,
Thank you so much!! You were amazing and you have no idea how much I appreciate you being there and testifying.
The arbitrator DID rule in our favor, finally, with many attempts to stall a ruling by the opposing side.
The opposing side has the option to say they disagree with the ruling, in which case it would go to a trial. We have about 25 days left on that clock. If they don't do that then in 25 days we can start collection proceedings to get our money back.
I will keep you in the loop! Thanks again!

Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know the arbitrator awarded everything we asked for plus all our attorney fees. They may still want to appeal this to a jury rather than an arbitrator, so I’ll let you know if that happens. I’m still hoping their insurance company will step in to make this right, but I’m not optimistic. I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication to this case. I very much appreciate it, and I know the owners are also appreciative.
Thank you,
Don (Attorney)

Hi Joe!
We met with the Contractor tonight and asked him for a full refund of the initial payment we made. He was disappointed, but has agreed to do it. You wouldn't have believed how it went down. I sent him your report last night and I received an email from him this morning that said "We will have to get some bids for replacement unfortunately.
I have a couple of people I can call on. Let me know. Pretty disappointed but I have to press forward." I emailed him right back and said, "We’d prefer to continue on our own, Don. We have already received a bid for a replacement roof and are going to move forward and put this horrible experience behind us. Terry and I have discussed that you HAVE TO understand our position. With that being said, we would like a refund of the initial payment we made to you. There is no question that this was a fundamentally flawed process from the very beginning." He then asked if we could meet at 4:00 today. We met with him and explained that we didn't have any confidence in him and that we wanted to cut our losses and put a beautiful roof on our home, and that we didn't think we could accomplish that with him. I also mentioned to him that I had no problem filing a Complaint with the CCB or contacting a Construction Defect attorney. At that point he knew we were finished and not going to back down. We don't have the check yet, mind you, but I feel confident that he will come through.
So YAYYY!! Isn't it funny that we had to pay YOU to prepare a report, with pictures, to convince him that the roof wasn't viable? That's SO messed up. It was kind of funny - we were sitting at the dining room table where you and I sat and I looked out the window. There was a piece of shingle hanging in the rhododendron bush. A HUGE piece of shingle debris, just HANGING in the bush. I told him, "This sums it all up!"
AND . . . we have an appointment with Hipolito G. at 9:00 in the morning to sign his contract and give him a down payment. He can squeeze us in the second week of August. I can't tell you how happy I am and if it wasn't for you, I'm not sure where we'd be. I'm just so grateful and happy and relieved. I cannot say thank you enough!!!
I DID mail your check today, so it should be arriving shortly.
Thanks again, Joe. You are our hero!!!!

To: Joe Sardotz
Hi Joe!! I hope this finds you doing GREAT!! Hipolito/Gonzalez-Eagle Roofing started our new roof yesterday. We could not be happier with him and his crew. What a difference!!
I need to ask you something and I want you to be REALLY honest and forthcoming with me, as you've always been (I don't thing you have any other way!!). We have found more horrific things under the shingles. Just to name a couple, the vents that were installed weren't actually vented to anything. They were just up there for show. The plywood that was replaced wasn't in full sheets. They just kind of piece-mealed it. Hipolito took a picture and showed me. There were some old boards that they sawed off (you can tell because the wood is splintered). Then they put a piece of plywood next to it, but there was a good 4 inch gap. They didn't even nail down the plywood (you mentioned not to be surprised if it was duct-taped!!!). There are a lot more things that were done deceitfully. I suspect they believed no one would ever go up there to check. My question to you is, can we get their license revoked? The Contractor who hired (the roofer) is (REDACTED) Construction. I believe that he had some knowledge that corners were being cut. He DID refund all of our money, but I feel REALLY violated by all of this. Should I just forget it and let these crooks take advantage of some other unsuspecting peeps who are only expecting a roof that works? Just looking for a little advice here. We're not going to sue them, but it's not fair that these shysters are out and about, still installing roofs that are pieces of shit.
Whatcha think? If you'd rather talk on the phone about this, I'll be around all day tomorrow.
Your opinion means a lot to me and I am REALLY angry at this situation. I remember sitting at my dining room table with Don, the Contractor, (REDACTED) Construction told us he'd guaranty the roof for five years. THEN he said he'd bring by a home inspector who would pass the roof. He's as bad as the peeps who did the work!!!
Is there anything I can do to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else?
Thanks, Joe. I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kim

(NAMES REDACTED TO PROTECT THE GUILTY)
The roof is STUNNING, it only took them five days and they brought their own port-a-potty. Shocking, right? (I DID tell you that the first roofers used our garden shed as a toilet and LEFT the mess, didn’t I? Yep, they CRAPPED in our garden shed and left it!!!). Not only was the roof beautiful and they were so good to have around for five days, but they also do painting. They just finished painting all the trim on the house and did ANOTHER stellar job.
Thought you would find this interesting - Roofers #1 (REDACTED), who subbed the job to (REDACTED) Roofing: The vents that they put on the roof? They didn’t cut holes to vent the roof. They set the vents on the roof and then shingled around it, as if they HAD vented the roof. Many other little things, too, as you thought. I get pissed off all over again every time I think about that prick GC from (REDACTED) who brought those unqualified tweakers to my house, and they peed in my bushes and (crapped) in my shed and knew they were were installing a roof that wasn’t right. Grrrrrrrr...
Hope all is good in your world, Joe. I need to finish posting some horrific reviews of these two companies. I did a couple, but this is a good reminder. What would REALLY be bad is if (REDACTED) is STILL using (REDACTED). Don, the owner of (REDACTED), knows that (REDACTED) installed our roof not to Code. He is a criminal if he continues to use them. I REALLY wish I could find a homeowner who is having (REDACTED) use (REDACTED) to install a roof. I’d love to give the homeowner my story!!
Thanks for checking in. Take good care!

I am so thankful I called Joe from Oregon Roof and Consulting. After dealing with a terrible contractor and even worse roofers, we were very concerned about the installation of our brand new roof. Joe came out and did a visual inspection and found many problem areas: over driven nails, incorrect ridge installation (we were quoted for one thing and received something different), over-lapping shingles, the list goes on and on. Joe provided us with a written inspection that we then gave to our contractor. The contractor “fixed” the issues, and we were set. Or so we thought. Joe then came and met with our contractors, who informed us that the shingle manufacturer had come out for an inspection. Joe did some investigating on our behalf, and it turns out the shingle manufacturer had NOT come out. Really long story short (this was a 6 month process from start to finish), Joe got involved in month 3. After Joe’s due diligence, we ended up getting the entire roof comp'ed! Joe’s incredible expertise and experience saved us from spending $18k on a roof that was done by what he calls “cowboy roofers.”
His fees were fair and completely worth it in the long run. My only complaint is I wished I would have called him sooner.
If you have any hesitation about your roof, Joe is the man to call! I would highly recommend. Hopefully we don’t have to deal with roofers for a long time, but if we do, I will call someone from his list of recommendations and have Joe lined up from the get go.
Thanks for all your hard work, Joe!

"After a sub-standard roof job on my house, I called Joe. He did an expert inspection, then produced a thorough report on its flaws and defects, with great detailed pictures.
From the first phone call through the mediation that finally resolved my problem, Joe gave me, and all involved, the facts needed to wrap this up and move forward - it was obvious that his professional input was respected . He has the experience and no-nonsense clarity to really help support a homeowner struggling with a non-professional job. I really appreciated his kindness and patience through the whole process.”

Hello Joe,
It's no coincidence that the prices go lower every time you show up. You have saved us a lot of money and we are so appreciative of your knowledge and insight. I'm so sorry things also got a little crazy after the poor guy fell through the ceiling - they did go get a sheet rocker and it was fixed within the hour.

My husband and I noticed our upstairs was much warmer after our cedar shake roof was converted to composite, and asked Joe to evaluate the attic ventilation. Joe is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to roof installation, details, flashing, and roof/attic care. We were pleased to learn from an independent source that our roof was installed correctly, and that the upstairs warmth was mostly due to the installation of plywood with underlayment and the increased insulative properties of asphalt shingles.
If you have roof trouble or are concerned that your contractor might not be installing the roof correctly, do yourself a favor and pay the $150 for peace of mind!! I would also highly recommend Joe as a roof inspector as a part of a pre-purchase home inspection, if your inspector does not already do this. — Andrea J.
Laura B: Homeowner Testimonial (3/14/16)
As a first time home buyer, Joe has been an invaluable resource [to me]. After our home inspection on Friday, my husband and I realized we needed to hire an expert to check out the roof as it was not in the shape that an eleven year-old roof should be. After some internet research I thankfully came across Joe's website. Feeling confident with his 39 years of experience, and the positive testimonials, I gave him a call. He patiently answered all of my questions, quoted me a very reasonable price, was willing to drive out to the home despite it being kind of rural, and thankfully was able to fit us in on Monday! I loved that he even checked the weather forecast before deciding the time and date. I emailed Joe a copy of the home inspection report. I was blown away when he emailed back shortly after with his expert opinion.
We met Joe today and I am so thankful we found him; he is just a wealth of knowledge, so genuine and down to earth, a true professional and, most importantly, he knows what he's doing. We had the best case scenario happen: The roof was made by a company that had a known issue around the time the home was built. Joe amazingly knew the exact rep to call to begin the replacement process and provided our realtor and me with his name and number.
Knowing that Joe is always there to answer any follow-up questions, and can recommend reputable roofers to replace the roof gives me so much peace of mind and takes away a lot of the stress that comes with buying a new home. Thank you Joe for being punctual, so kind and for being such a professional; you are forever my go-to guy when it comes to roofs!! — Laura B.

Joe is a life saver. We were embroiled in a very difficult conflict with a roofer after we experienced the worst leak ever a few months after they installed our roof. Because we are not experts in this field and have limited knowledge about roofs or chimneys, the roofing company was trying to blame it all on the chimney and were refusing to take any responsibility.
Without Joe’s help, we would not have been able to take them on. We hired Joe to do an independent roofing inspection and the results were shocking. For sure, our chimney did need major repairs and the leakage was caused partly by the chimney; however, the roofers had done such a @*%!!#& job that they basically inverted the water so it was running down into our house. Without Joe’s report and insight we would never have known that.
Joe gave us the confidence to take them on and not back down and this is what finally made them show up and do the repairs on their side that needed to be done, at their cost. It was thanks to Joe that we were able to stand our ground.
If you are ever facing any trouble with a roofer, we cannot recommend Joe highly enough. He is definitely THE go to person. We felt fully supported throughout the process, including a very generous offering of his time in responding to emails and providing us with free support throughout our conflict negotiations.
We are really grateful for your help Joe, thank you again for your incredible support, generosity and for backing us during a really stressful time, we couldn’t have done it without you!! — Niyati and Robert E.

As a Realtor, I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about basic roofing until there were some hiccups with mine. At my urgent and panicked request, Joe came over immediately and inspected my roof, wrote up a report, gave me a list of items to demand, and supported me in my request to have the roof completely torn off and re-done, and would have backed me up officially had my request been denied. He then followed up with a visit to re-inspect and gave me the all-clear, alleviating much of the stress I'd garnered from the whole situation.
As a Realtor, I order and okay roofs all the time, and now I realize how easily consumers are hoodwinked. It's nice to have an advocate on our side, and I will be referring Joe to all of my clients purchasing, or having issues with older ones, henceforth! — Alyssa S

If you are reading this you are in the right place. Joe Sardotz of Oregon Roof and Consulting is a true advocate. I found him to be honest, reliable, capable, and knowledgeable.
I needed an unbiased opinion/inspection of a new roof I had placed on my home, before making final payment. Joe came and the first thing he said to me was, "I present only the facts," which is what I wanted. He presented me with a verbal as well written report and pictures to document his findings of deficits he found with my roof.
What he presented was eye opening and as a result I was in litigation for over seven months, finally seeking the involvement of the Construction Contractors Board (CCB). Joe came to my hearing and gave his report, which I believe was a big factor in my reaching a favorable resolution. Thank you Joe for your truth and diligence. — Queenie S
** It is the contractor's obligation and responsibility to apply roof coverings per shingle manufacturer specifications and/or the Oregon Residential Specialty Code. Just because a permit and inspection are not required for most roofing jobs doesn't mean the contractor can cut corners and/or not follow industry guidelines. Considering the cost of a new roof, property owners should expect the job to be done correctly. ORC believes that is not asking too much. — Oregon Roof Consulting and Inspection

Anyone who has purchased a home knows that finding a home is a lot easier than buying that dream house. The risks are daunting. You may locate the perfect home only to find out that it’s not so perfect. On our recent purchase I wanted to make sure that I didn’t get stuck with somebody else’s headache. When it came to a roof inspection, I did not want to leave it to the home inspection folks. And I certainly wasn’t going to bring in a roofing company that has a conflict of interest — since objectivity isn’t always profitable.
I called Joe Sardotz at Oregon Roof Consulting and Inspection. First thing, Joe rearranged his schedule to accommodate a short window on our inspection. He told us that he would be there between 11:00 and 11:15 am and he was there at 11:00 am sharp. He got right to work and walked the entire roof. Joe took his time to explain what he was looking for and pointed out a few items that needed attention. He said the roof was in great shape and should give us years of service. Joe sent us a very detailed report that gave us piece of mind. Joe’s charge for the inspection was very reasonable — especially when you consider the thousands of dollars you can spend on a bad roof!
I will recommend Oregon Roof Consulting and Inspection to anyone that tells me they are looking to buy a home. If I buy another home or if I plan to have major repairs, I will consult with Joe again!

I think you should add another hammer to your truck in honor of the help you provided us. I was convinced that I should spend a bunch of money on a new roof after my initial house inspector told me when I bought the house that the roof was on its last legs. I figured I was living on borrowed time with the roof. The initial two consultants from roofing companies seemed to confirm my fear. The peace of mind that you've given me is tremendous, particularly at time when money is incredibly tight for me. You can count on us to refer you to anyone and everyone we may run across who is dealing with anything roof related!
P.S. I appreciate that you spelled my last name correctly. The two roofing companies spelled it wrong. It's a little thing, and it is misspelled all of the time, so when it is spelled correctly, it's a sign to me of someone paying attention!
Geoff G : Homeowner Testimonial (06/17/2014)
Joe caught this faulty nailing job, among other problems, when he inspected Geoff G's roof.
When Joe asked customer Geoff G. how a meeting with the roofing company went, customer replied:
It was actually a great conversation this morning. The owner of the company went through all of the pictures you had sent. He and the installation manager also climbed on the roof to check out a couple of things. In the end, the owner agreed that it was done incorrectly and not up to their normal standards. They are going to replace the entire roof, and also upgrade the shingles.
Thanks again for your help on this, and for getting us the information we needed to resolve this with the roofing company. We will also be getting a check out in the mail for you.
Later, Joe received the following testimonial from the customer:
We found Joe Sardotz's website when we were looking for a second opinion on a recently completed roofing project. Joe's lengthy industry experience and desire to make sure we were informed homeowners were ideal in our situation. His eye for detail uncovered the incorrect installation methods that we would have never looked for. He thoroughly documented the process and took the time to educate us. We were then able to present his findings to the roofing company and achieve a positive outcome. Joe's expertise gave us confidence and peace of mind. He is a true customer advocate. I came across Joe's website and was very impressed with it as it has great tips in helping a homeowner be more aware of what to look for when getting bids from roofers. I asked him to come over and take a look at the bids I have. He came over the next day and we talked for 2 hours about the roofing business, how some roofers operate, what details are important for a good roof, and what to do and not to do to get a good roof. It was a very productive meeting and the consulting fee is well worth it especially considering the cost of doing a new roof. Joe said he is available to assist/consult throughout the entire roofing job if needed.

Joe is a man of the highest integrity. His yes means yes and his no means no. His word is as good as gold. When it comes to roofing or anything related, my first call will always be to Joe Sardotz.

Joe Sardotz knows construction: material supply, proper application and install procedures. Joe is the type you need to consult before and after, meaning Joe can inspect and provide a well written narrative supported by photographic evidence of pre-existing conditions and identify improper applications and offer the best possible solution to remedy your construction issues at any stage of your project.
Joe’s skill set includes inspections, cost estimate bidding and providing solutions to problematic applications for your construction projects. Joe is thorough and thoughtful. Joe can present systematic and scientific evidence to attorneys and be influential in bringing about out of court settlements of your construction disputes.
Mr. Sardotz is a credit to the construction industry and building trade for the northwest. Joe is highly respected by his peers for his professional business practices. I would encourage you to contact Joe for your construction issues that require on site inspections and formal documentation, such as photographic evidence and written inspection reports. Joe has excellent communication skills that enable him to address and respond to attorney inquiry or as an experienced expert witness for depositions, trials or arbitrations.
I am very proud of Mr. Sardotz for being on hand to witness the original roofing contractor’s after-the-job completion reinspection and for providing an independent third party inspection report with irrefutable photos that clearly document the improper roof install at my residence which helped my attorney win a final pre trial settlement offer vs. the large local area roofing contractor. Call Joe!

Arlyss D: Boring, OR Homeowner Testimonial (2003)
Just wanted to thank you for the fantastic job you did when you replaced my shake roof. I very much appreciate your work ethic. You actually showed up to work when you said you would! The weather was unusually hot, but you were still up on the roof! I appreciate the fact that you discussed the options and gave me the choices in how the roof was to be done. Your extra TLC in hand nailing, in replacing and painting pipes and vents on the roof helped make it a superior job. Many neighbors have commented on what a good job you did. It is obvious that you are not just another roofer, you are a craftsman. I won't hesitate to recommend you highly to anyone who needs a new roof. Best wishes!

We are very happy with the new roof Joe did for us. It is a Malarkey Legacy 50 year roof that was hand nailed with special trim that wraps over the edges. It looks great! The attention to detail showed a pride in workmanship that is rare today. He gave us many options and clarified areas we were unclear about resulting in an attractive roof that will last for many years to come.

You have completed my roof and I am more than pleased. I didn't know that a roofer could be a craftsman. My roof looks like you made it to fit my house and your attention to detail adds to the upgrading of my whole place. There is no mess, nails or debris anywhere and everything is so clean. Whatever you said you would do you did, and even more.
It has been a pleasure to have my roof replaced because you and your crew have been so professional. The men that work for you are skilled and very courteous.Thank you so much. I am very grateful.

David W. Hilts, Architect and Planner (1/16/2013)
Art and music studio. (Dave built this house with a hammer!)
I first met Joe back in 1996 when he did some roofing work for a friend of mine. When I inspected the job he was doing I was immediately struck by the high quality and attention to detail of the job. I was contemplating doing two major roofing projects the following summer. As an Architect I was well aware of the typical quality of roofing installations being done around town and I was looking for a roofer who would be willing to work along with me and to pay attention to 'the details' as we made the necessary repairs to the many rotted out elements during the roofing replacement.
My office building is a 3,800 square foot, 3 story structure built in 1911, with three layers of roofing, including the original wood shingles, over skip sheeting. These would all have to come off. The location had limited access and was a very technical job involving integration of a arched barrel vault dormer into a hipped gable roof. Joe suggested installing scaffolding up to the eave, allowing easy access to repairs and allowing work to be done in a safe manner. The scaffolding could be moved around the building as work progressed. This was a fantastic idea and of course made a tough job easier.
My personal home was built in 1878 and is a rambling 4,500 square foot, 3 story structure with a wrap around veranda and loaded down with 4 layers of roofing, including the original wood shingles over skip sheeting, 2 layers of asphalt shingles and topped with rolled roofing. During the tear off we filled two 40 yard dumpsters with the removed roofing materials. Further complicating the job was the lack of access and technical details like 3 chimneys in need of rebuilding, and old wood built-in gutters which would need to be removed, requiring new outriggers and fascias to hold a new external gutter system. We salvaged the original metal finials from the top of the gables and center hip and where we couldn't salvage them, Joe had his sheetmetal fabricator provide some material we could use to match the original design. I also wanted to add a dormer to the south side to allow expansion plans on the 3rd floor.
We began work following the 4th of July on my office structure and completed work on my home project on Labor Day. I worked with Joe and his crew everyday and even though the projects were full of surprises and challenges they went off without a hitch.
Joe's quality of roofing work was flawless and his professionalism is a breath of fresh air. His knowledge of how to properly install flashings and underlayments is without match and wide ranging. Simply put, Joe knows what he is doing. He hand nails everything to assure that the roof sheathing is firmly attached to the understructure and the roofing is applied according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Needless to say in the almost 16 years since the roofing projects I have never experienced a roof leak!
I would highly recommend Joe Sardotz to anyone thinking of doing a roofing project. The earlier he is involved the better!
David Kunze: Owner Custom Gutters, Oregon City (12/18/12)
I have known Joe since the early 80's, as he used our company for all of his gutter and sheet metal work. What I noticed about Joe is that he was a perfectionist and was willing to do all the little things that everyone else was not willing to do. Make his job stand up where other installs would have failed.
I have worked with and for hundreds of roofers and in my opinion is that Joe is the best I have seen. Easy call for me. His dedication and attention to detail is uncanny. His next step in his career as a consultant seems like the logical way to utilize his vast experience and help homeowners avoid being taken advantage of. Anyone would be well served using his services.
From a phone conversation with David Kunze, owner Custom Gutters, Oregon City. David's dad started Custom Gutters in 1962. They had the first continuous gutter machine in Portland. Many guys that own gutter companies at one point worked for Custom. No foolin'!

Caralynn R.
He and his crew will come back and redo the opening, plus, use 3 inch nails to nail down the ridge vent and the ridge caps. He, also, plans to put a second collar on every pipe. Thank you for the inspection. These are things we wouldn't have found without your help.
Sincerely, Carolyn R.
